What you can expect in this position:

Under the direction of the Director, Financial Planning & Analysis, the Senior Financial Analyst Research and Grants Administration is responsible for providing accounting, reporting, and financial analysis support to the Blood Research Institute (BRI) and Versiti Blood Research Foundation (VBRIF), including the Philanthropy and Technology Transfer Offices as a member of the BRI/VBRIF leadership teams. This role partners with BRI leadership and scientists to maintain timely and accurate financial grant administration and compliance, proactively takes initiative to drive action based on data, makes recommendations to BRI/VBRIF leadership for executing operational improvements to enhance customer satisfaction, financial margins, and business growth and development, and plays a leading role in developing BRIs long range financial plans.

What you will do:

Grant Administration

  • Administers grants and grant reporting for research grants, contracts, and subcontracts.
  • Ensures spending is in accordance with grantor requirements on a timely basis.
  • Works as a partner with research investigators, research administration, and the executive leadership team in developing and negotiating grant awards, and to develop budgets, projections, and analyze spending.
  • Prepares required financial reports to grantors and assists in resolving issues and rate negotiations with appropriate federal agencies (primarily the NIH), including the timely completion of annual indirect cost proposal, reimbursement requests, updates to monthly Effort Reports, monthly core lab billings and all Salary Effort Distribution (SED) & Employee Status change forms.
  • Coordinates preparation and completion of audit schedules, confirmations, audit, footnote disclosures, and general timing of activities for the A-133 audit reports.
  • Ensures appropriate controls are in place related to grants.
  • Documents and annually reviews policies and procedures related to grant administration.

Service Line Support (BRI and BCRF, including Philanthropy and Technology Transfer Offices)

  • Works as a partner to executives and leadership teams, administration, and research and clinical investigators of assigned service line(s) to provide ongoing financial analysis for current operations and support financial analysis of future operational proposals. Develops and analyzes financial and statistical reports as needed.
  • In partnership with the leadership teams of the BRI, takes a proactive role in generation of departmental and research grant budgets, and other analyses in developing forecasts, financial impact assessments, and long-range plans. Consolidates service line budget models into useful reports.
  • Develops appropriate cost models. Utilizes models to track results as needed. Designs and prepares on-going financial forecasts and costing models. Analyzes and summarizes trends.
  • Participates in the development of prices and price structures for current and new procedures or products.
  • Provides project management leadership in executing operational improvements, as needed. Develops understanding of assigned service line process flows and recommends improvements to enhance customer satisfaction and financial margins.
  • Provides leadership for organizational and service line initiatives and special projects as needed.
  • Participates in developing, maintaining, and improving organizational financial systems including assisting in product selection decisions, working on design and implementation of projects, performing ongoing upgrades and troubleshooting, and creating and modifying system generated reports and inquiries.
  • Oversees and completes as appropriate the financial monthly close and reporting for the BRI, VBRIF, and Philanthropy.
  • Monitors licensing revenue and patent expenses.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Serves as an integral member of the BRI leadership team(s).
  • Resolves problems related to purchasing, accounting and finance for research.
  • Creates and updates written procedures that document accounting activities and controls.
  • Develops and improves financial modeling and planning.
  • Attends seminars, user groups, and other professional association meetings. Maintains network of information about current accounting practices and implements selected projects.
  • Provides back up support to other Financial Analysts as needed.
  • Educates and trains research staff regarding authorized revenues and expenditures related to federal research awards.
  • Remains current with financial management rules, regulations and procedures of all awarding agencies.
  • Maintains financial accounting system for all grant expenditures.

You will need:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Four to seven years of public or private accounting experience
  • Experience in providing financial analysis in support of operational activities
  • Experience with an integrated accounting and finance system
  • Experience writing financial statements and management reports
  • Experience in the financial management of research grants required
