Overview

Deerfield Discovery and Development, LLC (3DC) will engage in drug discovery research in collaboration with faculty from top universities across the United States. 3DC is the drug discovery arm of Deerfield Management Company, L.P. (?Deerfield?), an investment firm dedicated to advancing healthcare. The goal of 3DC is to enable portfolio companies of Deerfield?s investment funds create a pipeline of medically important and commercially viable projects at a scale sufficient to produce value for patients and investors. Project teams will consist of scientists from a wide variety of disciplines (chemistry, biology, computational science, software and automation engineering), working together in a highly collaborative environment to advance these goals.

We seek an entrepreneurial Medicinal Chemistry leader to develop and lead the Chemistry capability within 3DC. The ideal candidate has strong technical and problem-solving skills in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, including PK/PD studies; has significant experience managing chemistry outsourcing; and has exceptional written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and critical thinking skills. The candidate will have experience in leading a chemistry function involved in programs from hit identification to clinical candidate nomination; experience leading cross-functional discovery teams in this space is highly desirable. The successful candidate will report to the CEO of 3DC and be part of a cross-functional leadership team.



Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Build an integrated chemistry capability to deliver industry-leading design, synthesis and characterization of molecules
  • Manage an integrated chemistry function (internal resources & external resources/consultants/partners) to seamlessly delivery functional responsibilities
  • Supervise external vendors/partners to ensure capabilities and work products meet 3DC standards
  • Drive chemistry tool development for target validation/advancement of discovery projects
  • Oversee development and execution of chemistry work plans
  • Partner with the 3DC leadership team to drive and optimize the prosecution of a highly diverse portfolio of projects


Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry with 20+ years of Medicinal Chemistry experience in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on small molecule drug discovery
  • Deep knowledge and demonstrated problem-solving skills in Synthetic Organic and Medicinal Chemistry.
  • Significant experience applying structural information and molecular modeling to the drug design process.
  • Excellent understanding of the drug discovery process and a proven track record of contributing to the identification of lead compounds and clinical candidates.
  • Significant experience coordinating outsourced Synthetic Organic and Medicinal Chemistry programs.
  • Broad expertise of successfully prosecuting a wide range of biological target classes as a drug discovery project leader or similar team leadership role.
  • A track record of communicating scientific concepts and strategies effectively, including a publication record in top-tier, peer reviewed journals.
  • Excellent leadership capabilities with at least 10 years practice guiding and motivating successful teams, as well as building and managing productive research collaborations.
  • Very strong communication and partnering skills.
  • Ability to lead/manage across a diverse ecosystem; displays agility and pragmatism in driving execution across a highly heterogeneous environment.
