According to recent Bureau of Labor Statistics CES surveys, there are over 150 million jobs. This makes the United States the third largest labor force in the world, right behind China and India. The United States labor force has risen each year since 1960 with the exception of the Great Recession period in 2008. As a result, jobs are at an all-time high, and a strong workforce is essential for a strong economy.
Excluding postal service workers, the United States federal government currently employs over 2 million full-time employees. California, Virginia, Maryland, and Texas are the states with the most federal civilian employees. The United States Postal Service, which is not included in the previous labor statistics, employs over 600,000 workers making it the single largest segment of the civilian federal workforce. Unsurprisingly, the other agencies with the most civilian employees are the United States Army and Navy. The CIA and the FBI are some of the most popular federal agencies to work for as well.
Government jobs are attractive to many due to their good pension plans, regular working hours, and a sense of civic duty. Some of the most popular jobs in the public sector include school counselors, librarians, social workers, special education teachers, police officers, fire fighters, and EMTs. The federal government employs all sorts of workers, and some of the highest paid occupations in the federal government are securities compliance examiners, patent attorneys, nurse anesthetists, patent administrators, and judges of administrative law. While similar jobs in the private sector may pay more, these jobs have plenty of perks that make working for the federal government a fulfilling experience.
While there are millions of employees of the federal government, most jobs are in the private sector. The United States is the home to many of the world?s largest employers including Walmart, Amazon, DHL, Kroger, and Home Depot. All of these companies employ hundreds of thousands of workers in the United States. Walmart has more than 2 million employees globally and is responsible for more than 1.5 million jobs.
Considering that a lot of the largest employers in the United States are retailers, it is not surprising that many of my jobs that are the most popular are in the retail space. The largest occupations in the United States are retail salespersons, fast food workers, cashiers, registered nurses, waiters, customer service representatives, and movers. These 7 occupations, together, account for more than 23 million jobs in the united states. Considering there are roughly 150 million jobs, the 7 occupations listed above account for more than 15% of all jobs.
All in all, the United States has one of the largest and hottest job markets in the world. As a result, it has attracted a lot of attention from people around the globe and it is the reason that the United States has a larger immigrant population than any other country. Between the private and public sectors, the United States Labor Force surpasses 150 million persons. With massive employers in the private sector, there is no shortage of jobs. Subsequently, among large countries, the United States boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates. As mentioned above, the labor force has risen almost every year since 1960, and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
